It was time to think up some different Halloween cookie ideas and i kept coming back to the idea of a gothic chandelier, but how to make it? I decided to try my hand a burning a stencil! I found an inexpensive stencil burner at Michael's Crafts and picked up a pack of plastic stencil paper and printed out a chandelier pattern. I placed the pattern under a piece of glass that i took out of an old picture frame. Next i put the stencil plastic on top of the glass. When the stencil burner warmed up i started burning out the design - and i got a big mess, lots of gaping holes that didnt look anything like a chandelier! My dad explained that i needed to have a design that had pieces that didnt touch otherwise i would keep getting holes. I drew up my own design, scanned it into the computer and used what you see here.
Below are some pics of the stencil making process (click on pics to enlarge): Left- burning the stencil design, i used the knife to pop out the pieces. Center- here you can see the design and the stencil lifted. Right- finished stencil, ready for icing!

After my stencil was finished i baked up some dark chocolate sugar cookes that i had cut into 4.5" rounds. I made some white royal icing and tinted half of it black. I also had some fine white and black sanding sugar to flock my cookies and give a little sparkle. On some of the cookies i piped on a circle of white icing and let dry. I placed the stencil on top of the white icing and smoothed the black icing over the stencil. Then i carefully pulled it straight up and off the cookie and quickly poured black sanding sugar over the icing and let dry. When it was completely dry, i brushed off all the extra sugar and got the design you see above. For the white chandelier i left the cookie plain, smoothed white icing over the stencil and flocked with the white sanding sugar.
Here are the finished cookies below. I wrapped 2 cookies back-to-back with a square of magenta glassine between:
